What Are Direct-Inhalation Vaporizers?

Direct-inhalation vaporizers are those which deliver the vapor directly to the user without being stored in a bag or other container first.

These vaporizers are generally considered to be capable of providing richer, denser vapor than force-air vaporizers because the vapor is not sitting idle in a bag, becoming stale, mixing with air and forming condensation before being inhaled by the user. With direct-inhalation, vapor is inhaled immediately as it is being produced, providing the freshest and thickest vapor possible.

Most portable vaporizers fall into this category, as do the whip-style home vaporizers. While personal preferences can vary greatly from person to person, this type of vaporizer is usually the preferred method for more experience vaporists and those who like thicker vapor in general.

One of the drawbacks of direct-inhalation vaporizers is that they are not always as easy to use as their forced-air counterparts. This is because most direct-inhalation vaporizers, unless they have a good smart temperature controller, require the user to use a particular, consistent draw speed in order to achieve the best results. Draw speed is important because the speed at which the user inhales directly effects the temperature of the vaporization taking place. Slower draws will cause the heated air to pass over the herbs more slowly, this will cause the temperature to be higher because the heated air is in contact with the herb for a longer period of time. Likewise, faster draws cause the hot air to spend less time in contact with the herb and will produce thinner vapor due to the reduction in temperature that this causes.

However, in general it does not take much time for a new owner of a direct-inhalation vaporizer to learn how to get good results out of their vaporizer. If you like to inhale fast, just use a higher temperature setting to compensate and vice versa. The main problem with this will arise if you are vaporizing in a group and the people within this group are not all inhaling at the same rate. This makes direct-inhalation vaporizers an ideal choice for someone who plans on mainly using it by themselves or with one or two other people, providing they have the patience to coach the new users through the technique.
